Why this location?
During the 1915 Flood
At this location on the evening of August 3, 1915, the debris buildup at the culvert under 26th Street was too much for the structure to bear. Despite men using ropes, manpower, and even dynamite, the clog was too much to pull apart. About 7:30 PM, the culvert broke, unleashing a pent-up wall of water 30 feet high and 200 feet wide through the city of Erie, racing its way to Lake Erie. The devastation cost the city over $3 million (in 1915 terms) to clean up and rebuild in the next several decades.
Veteran's Stadium did not exist in 1915, nor did the school which is now the home of Collegiate Academy. The area was quite rural, with occasional farmhouses just outside of the city. Historic photos show the creation of the Tube coincided with the construction of Academy High School, now Collegiate Academy.
