Why this location?

This is the site of the original Erie Brewing Company in 1915.

The floodwaters that broke loose at 26th Street raged downhill behind where this building stands. This block is also the location where Fire Chief McMahon and firefighter John Donovan were swept away in the waters during their efforts to save others who were stranded.

Looking Back

Telephones were uncommon at that time, and information moved much more slowly than it does today. While those at the headwaters and upstream could see the devastation unfolding, many living and working downstream were simply unaware. Children played in the rain and families prepared for dinner and evening activities. For many in Erie that evening, information arrived much too late.
